Resolved tasks
For the first time in the history of Altai Krai, the region will host international competitions, where tickets for participation in the Olympic Games in 2021 in Tokyo will be drawn. The decision that Canoe sprint world cup 2 will be held in Barnaul was made back in March 2019. Then the meeting of the International
Canoe Federation (ICF) took place in Beijing.

Many countries were fighting for the right to host such a significant sporting event, but they chose Russia. The presentation of the Barnaul rowing canal, which competed with five competitors for the right to host these competitions, was rated the most highly. The Barnaul rowing canal is of artificial origin and has unique characteristics. It is protected from crosswinds by the terrain, so that all athletes are on an equal footing.
This is the first time we hold competitions of such a level and of course we are faced with the task of competently preparing and holding them with dignity. It will be a good guarantee for the further development of this sport, the rowing canal, and in general, drawing attention to the region and Barnaul.

Spectators will be able to get to the competition venue in several ways
Several options for spectators to get to the rowing canal have been thought out. During the competition days some commuter trains will make an additional stop on the temporary platform “The rowing canal”. It will take you 8 minutes to get from the railway station ”barnaul” to the platform “the rowing canal”.
Next to the canal there will be a temporary platform for people to disembark. Free buses will run from the river station to the rowing canal. Using personal transport to the rowing canal will be limited, but on the highway from Novoaltaisk to the “Old Bridge” they will make some parking lots where it will be possible to leave the car. Then spectators will be lifted to the rowing canal by shuttles.
A similar practice is used in other cities and countries that host international competitions.
canoeing history in Altai
1946-1956
Even in the post-war years, competitions in folk rowing on boats were held in Barnaul. As "Altayskiy Sport" writes, hundreds of fans gathered to watch these starts. Gradually, the interest in rowing on dinghies exhausted itself, but canoe sportsmen began to appear in the region.
1956
The canoe athletes of Altai Krai took part in the first Russian sports festival in 1956 and took third place in their subgroup. Konstantin Kostenko deserves special attention in the history of Altai canoeing. One day, he asked the sportsmen to let him get into the boat and take a few strokes. He could hardly imagine that he would become a two-time world champion. It was Konstantin Kostenko who initiated the creation of a rowing canal in Barnaul. His idea was successfully implemented.
1979
In 1979, a canoe department was opened in the regional sports school in Altai. Soon pupils began to assert themselves more and more confidently at the Union and Russian competitions.
2008
The modern stage of canoeing development in the region began with the creation of the regional children's and youth sports school for rowing and canoeing named after Konstantin Kostenko in 2008. At the same time, the Russian Rowing Federation showed interest in the rowing canal in Barnaul. To prepare for the Beijing Olympics, the Russian national team held a training camp in the capital of Altai Krai. After that a sprint canoeist Maksim Opalev became a two-time champion of the games.
2018
In recent years, the rowing canal infrastructure has been constantly developing, which made it possible to host the Champions Cup in Altai in 2018. In total, 14 Russian and 34 foreign athletes from 24 countries took part in the competition. Winners and prize-winners of the Olympic Games, World and European Championships arrived in Barnaul. Over two days, the competition was attended by 8 thousand fans. These international competitions became the prologue for Barnaul to host the Canoe sprint world cup 2.
2021
The Canoe sprint world cup 2 will take place in Barnaul. Here, vouchers will be raffled off to participate in the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
2023 и 2024
The capital of Altai Krai will claim to host the European and World Canoe Championships.
